94% Looper

All Critics (233) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (218) | Rotten (15)

The reasoning behind all this may not reward prolonged inspection, but Johnson is smart enough to press onward with his plot, leaving us with neither the time nor the desire to linger over the logic ...

Writer-director Rian Johnson establishes himself as an original talent who clearly believes storytelling must prevail.

A mind-bending ride that is not afraid to slow down now and again, to explore themes of regret and redemption, solitude and sacrifice, love and loss. It's a movie worth seeing and, perhaps, going back to see again.

Looper has more heart than Brick and the 2008 con-man flick The Brothers Bloom. Both fine achievements, they could also be described as viscerally cerebral.

I'm a sucker for time-travel movies.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss ...

The movie is morally murky, to put it lightly, and that's a bit refreshing; we're made to think about why we want the protagonists to achieve their goals.

Intelligent, extremely imaginative, visually stunning and constantly surprising, this is filmmaking of the highest order from Rian Johnson.

Looper is among the cleverest, most skillfully crafted and entertaining sci-fi thrillers of the past 20 years.

The smartest, most stylish and most outright entertaining science-fiction film of the year.

A thought-provoking, heart-pounding take on the applications and ethics of time travel which, oddly enough, doubles up as a lesson in the importance of good parenting.

This is one of those rare genre movies (like the original TERMINATOR) that reminds us that Sci-Fi can be smart. It's much more than just a bunch of special effects and explosions. It's what all movies should aspire to be.

While it sometimes feels like it's trying to do much, Looper manages to be a creditable and exciting sci-fi flick that homages the past while carving out a unique identity.

Much as he did in Brick, Johnson creates a carefully drawn world in Looper that exists by its own particular set of rules.

... has an irresistible energy and a don't-give-a-damn unpredictability ...

Beautifully crafted, acted and written.

Anchors high-concept thrills and captivating ideas in a world of challenging morality and intricate personal consequences.

Truly imaginative but all the twists and turns make the overall film difficult to follow. Plus Gordon-Levitt has not reached leading man status yet.

Kind of a reverse-"Terminator" without any of James Cameron's wit (or wisdom),

An endlessly creative mind-blowing film that captures everything right about the movie going experience. Johnson conjures up the most imaginative action/science fiction film since 'Inception.'

Part science fiction, part mob movie, and with a nice infusion of dark comedy at just the right moments, Looper is Johnson's best movie yet, and manages to be hugely entertaining, affecting, and thought-provoking.

takes us far beyond the film's high-concept premise into the kind of emotional terrain that too often escapes even the best genre filmmakers

Doesn't quite reach the heights of the lofty ideals that it so ardently seeks to expound, but makes up for this with the sheer thrill of the journey Rian Johnson takes us on.

Ingenious with a fine performance by Emily Blunt, but far too much cold-blooded violence.

Engaging, exciting, and successfully cross-breeding elements of Terminator and even Pet Sematary, Looper is a solid work of palatable science-fiction.

Looper's super. An action-thriller that bothers to have a brain.

Colts beat Chiefs 20-13 to clinch playoff berth

(AP) ? Andrew Luck has the rookie passing record.

More importantly, he got the surprising Indianapolis Colts into the playoffs.

The Colts' rookie quarterback completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne on third-and-goal late in the fourth quarter Sunday, allowing Indianapolis to squeeze out a 20-13 victory.

Luck finished with 205 yards passing to break Cam Newton's year-old rookie record of 4,051 yards in a season.

The fabulous freshman also extended his own rookie record for fourth-quarter comebacks to seven by leading his team downfield in the closing minutes.

Darius Butler returned an interception 32 yards for their other touchdown, helping the Colts (10-5) join the Miami Dolphins of 2008 as the only teams in NFL history to win at least 10 games after losing 14 or more the previous season.

Most of those wins have come under interim coach Bruce Arians, who has filled in admirably while Chuck Pagano underwent treatment for leukemia. Pagano could rejoin the Colts on Monday and coach for the first time since September in their regular-season finale against Houston.

Jamaal Charles had 226 yards rushing for the Chiefs (2-13), including an 86-yard touchdown scamper on the first play of the second half. It was Charles' second 200-yard game of the season, and came one week after he managed 10 yards on nine carries against Oakland.

Charles joined the Titans' Chris Johnson and former Lions great Barry Sanders as the only players with three runs of 80 or more yards in a season. His third career 200-yard game also set a franchise record, which he had shared with Larry Johnson.

Peyton Hillis added 101 yards rushing for the Chiefs, but they didn't get a whole lot of help from Brady Quinn, who was just 19 of 22 for 162 yards and two interceptions.

The Colts also could have reached the playoffs if the Steelers lost or tied, but preferred to take care of it themselves, and before their regular-season finale against Houston.

It looked good for them right from the start.

On the Chiefs' fifth offensive play, Quinn threw woefully behind Dexter McCluster ? who wasn't even looking for the ball ? and Butler picked off the pass in stride, taking it untouched to the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Kansas City managed to get a field goal out of Ryan Succop, but he missed his next try and the Colts went the other direction to set up the first of Adam Vinatieri's two field goals.

Charles fumbled in the red zone later in the second quarter ? the biggest blemish on his otherwise spectacular day. That gave Luck and the rest of the Colts offense enough time to move into Vinatieri's range, and his 36-yard field goal in the closing seconds made it 13-3 at halftime.

Charles electrified a sparse crowd on the first play of the second half, when he angled to the left and then found room down the sideline, cutting back toward the middle of the field and then winning a foot-race with the Indianapolis defense for an 86-yard touchdown run.

The Chiefs were in position to take the lead later in the third quarter, but Quinn was picked off by Vontae Davis in the end zone. The defense forced a three-and-out and Kansas City was driving again before settling for Succop's tying 47-yard field goal.

The Chiefs got the ball back again late in the fourth quarter, but Quinn was stuffed on a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-inches from the Indianapolis 27.

That turned the ball over to Luck, who completed an 11-yard pass to T.Y. Hilton to convert a third down, and then found Wayne for two more passes to set up his go-ahead touchdown reception with 4:08 left in the game.

Kansas Beats Ohio State, 74-66: Ben McLemore's 22 Gives Jayhawks Huge Road Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? It's not supposed to be this easy for a kid playing his first collegiate road game.

Kansas' Ben McLemore, a redshirt freshman surrounded in the starting lineup by seniors, didn't let the raucous crowd, the travel or sleeping in a strange bed bother him.

McLemore scored 22 points and No. 9 Kansas proved it was more than just a bully at home by beating seventh-ranked Ohio State 74-66 on Saturday.

"This was great. It was my first time playing in an away game," McLemore said with a slight smile. "You go up and down the court a little bit, and you get into the game. I kept my intensity, I just played my game."

For that matter, none of the Jayhawks had yet played a true road game this season. Kansas, which has won nine in a row since losing to Michigan State 67-64 on Nov. 13 in Atlanta, came in 7-0 at home, with two other games played before friendly fans in nearby Kansas City.

They had barely heard a boo all season.

No wonder coach Bill Self was a little worried.

"I had concerns, for sure," Self said. "Our seniors are good and quality and they've been through some things, but against a team that pressures man-to-man and you're playing with one primarily (ball) handler? That was my biggest concern."

But the Jayhawks (10-1) weathered a 14-0 run by the Buckeyes (9-2) in the first half that turned the volume up in Value City Arena to 11 on a scale of 10. Then, down in the second half, they held cold-shooting Ohio State without a field goal for more than 10 minutes to take control.

The Buckeyes, who were led by Deshaun Thomas' 16 points and a career-best 15 by Shannon Scott, hit just 9 of 36 shots from the field in the final 20 minutes. For the game, they ended up making only 31 percent of their shots from the field.

No wonder coach Thad Matta looked so stunned when he spoke after the game.

"There was one point in the second half where I turned to the bench and I said, `Hey, let's call a play where we score,'" he said, heavy on the irony. "A lot of it just comes down to you've got to put the ball in the basket in a game like this and we couldn't do it. It became contagious."

Sixty percent of the starting lineup ? star defender Aaron Craft, usually reliable Lenzelle Smith Jr. and post man Evan Ravenel ? was a combined 5 of 24 from the field.

Credit the Jayhawks, who play withering man-to-man defense and then are backed up by the incredible wingspan of 7-foot Jeff Withey underneath. Or blame the Buckeyes, who frequently were all alone when they bricked a shot off the rim. But no matter the reason, Ohio State couldn't buy a bucket for most of the second half.

It was the third victory for the Jayhawks in little more than a year over the Buckeyes (9-2). Kansas won a 64-62 thriller in last year's NCAA semifinals.

"Today's probably the best we've played against Ohio State in the three games," Self said. "We were really good except for about a 3-minute stretch in the first half when they went on a (14-0) run. Other than that stretch, that was a pretty good 35 minutes we played out there."

Withey added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Jayhawks. Elijah Johnson had 13 points and Travis Releford 11.

They weathered Ohio State's first-half tear by relying on the seniors.

"We have a good group of vets and we've been in tough situations before," Withey said. "We just bounced back. We just had to kind of breathe a little bit."

Ahead 56-52 with 7 minutes left, Kansas pulled away thanks to its McLemore. He hit a pair of foul shots and then flipped in a 15-foot jumper that bounced not once, not twice, but three times before falling through. Off an inbounds pass, McLemore then came off a back pick and dunked to push the lead to 62-52 with 5 minutes left.

The Buckeyes never got closer than six points again.

Self said he found out a little more about McLemore in the game.

"There's a lot of stuff I'm curious about Ben," he said. "He's still trying to figure out how to play. You can tell in late-game situations, he's played less basketball than anybody that's as old as him and as good as him around. It's all new to him. When it all comes naturally to him, he's going to become terrific."

In his first road game, he already was.

Perchlorate in Drinking Water Raises Health Concerns

Besides its potential to cause endocrine system and reproductive problems, perchlorate is considered a ?likely human carcinogen? by the EPA

Dear EarthTalk: What is ?perchlorate? in our drinking water supply, and why is it controversial??David Sparrow, Chico, Calif.

Perchlorate is both a naturally occurring and man-made chemical used in the production of rocket fuel, missiles, fireworks, flares and explosives. It is also sometimes present in bleach and in some fertilizers. Its widespread release into the environment is primarily associated with defense contracting, military operations and aerospace programs.

Perchlorate can be widespread in ground water, soils and plants, and makes its way up the food chain accordingly?even into organically grown foods. To wit, A 2005 Journal of Environmental Science and Technology study using ion chromatography to find contaminants in agricultural products found quantifiable levels of perchlorate in 16 percent of conventionally produced lettuces and other leafy greens and in 32 percent of otherwise similar but organically produced samples. Today, traces of perchlorate are found in the bloodstreams of just about every human on the planet.

Perchlorate in the environment is a health concern because it can disrupt the thyroid?s ability to produce hormones needed for normal growth and development. Besides its potential to cause endocrine system and reproductive problems, perchlorate is considered a ?likely human carcinogen? by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Some 11 million Americans live in areas where concentrations of perchlorate in public drinking water supplies are significantly higher than what is considered safe.

Per the mandate of the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA is currently working on setting national standards for how much perchlorate can be allowed in drinking water without putting people at risk. As part of the process, the agency is studying the available science on the health effects of perchlorate exposure and evaluating laboratory methods for measuring, treating and removing perchlorate in drinking water. The EPA will publish a proposed rule on the matter for public review at some point in 2013.

?We are happy that the EPA is moving ahead with a drinking water standard...but we are concerned that it won?t be strict enough,? reports Renee Sharp of the nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG). The group would like to see the U.S. adopt ?a truly health-protective drinking water standard lower than 1 ppb [parts per billion]? for perchlorate. Insiders don?t believe federal policymakers will go that low, however, since the EPA says it cannot detect perchlorate below 2 ppb. But EWG point out that Massachusetts is already testing for it with a 1 ppb cut-off, per the mandate of its statewide standard set back in 2006.

The only other state to have a drinking water standard for perchlorate is California, which set 6 ppb or less as an allowable concentration back in 2004. But that state?s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment recently proposed lowering the standard to 1 ppb based on new data regarding environmental exposure, possible effects of perchlorate and consideration of infants as a susceptible population.

If the EPA develops a tough new standard, almost every state will need to readjust its water monitoring systems to take into account how much perchlorate is making its way to our taps and into the foods we eat?a no doubt costly process but one that will greatly benefit both current and? future generations.

Disappointing coming from King James. But I guess after the 'Beautiful' ad, it's hard to maintain that level of brilliance.

The copy is fine, but ultimately the length of it serves little purpose. Why have long copy? Does it help the idea along in any way?

I'll hazard a guess that you could develop far more interesting creative solutions for a product like crunch time.

Despite a couple of good swings, the Miami Herald's Dan Le Batard pretty much failed to connect with reality in his column last Sunday, a 1,000 word humble-brag tricked out as a nostalgia job.

The basic thesis here moans that the Heat's 2012-13 season is a lot less "fun" now that the entire sporting world isn't actively rooting against Miami. Le Batard argues that Heat hate -- particularly all that bile flowing at LeBron for his unceremonious "decision" to leave Cleveland -- has a pre-championship* vintage. With all that negativity now on leave, the stakes seem lower. Not to mention:

All the loud critics have dispersed like cockroaches when the lights come on, leaving you no one to fumigate with your rage and defiance. All of a sudden, Charles Barkley won't shut up about how LeBron James is the greatest basketball player in the world, right up there with Michael Jordan. It is confusing. After throwing things at him outside the arena, are you supposed to like him now? You could cast a net over America without ensnaring a single LeBron critic now, although Skip Bayless might jump into that net voluntarily just to say that he did.

But don't worry, Dan. Plenty of people still hate the Heat.

I still hate the Heat.

Everyone back in my hometown, Cleveland, Ohio -- or as wise men back in the 216 call it, "the city Paris aspires to be" -- still hate on the Heat.

Oklahoma City? Pretty sure they're nursing some Heat hate.

Boston? Even more than last year.

That's not to say other teams and their fans aren't deserving of some flak. Le Batard is on solid footing when he says the Knicks faithful are hard to stomach this season due to their "unearned arrogance."

Then again, it's a headscratcher how Le Batard can drop a line like that without setting his internal irony meeter screaming, seeing how the Big Three were true pioneers in the "unearned arrogance" department. That is, until, as the columnist points out, the Heat won one particular game, thus cementing a championship*.

What Le Batard's column really shows is how the view from the press box is wildly different from the one in the bleacher seats.

Just because SportsCenter isn't gargling endless coverage on the-Heat-as-villains thing doesn't mean the average Joe NBA fan has somehow worked through his animus. If anything, the Heat's image as the league's showboating, money-grubbing, corporate D-bags has only settled into the accepted typecasting.

And that's what happens. Throughout their careers, NBA players eventually are shrink-wrapped inside a particular image. It sticks, no matter how hard you try to shake it. Kobe is a fucking psycho who just had Mike Brown's face tattooed on the bottom of his foot, right next to Shaq and Smush Parker. Dwight Howard is that guy from the eighth grade, always trying to be funny but instead leaving everybody feeling sad.

And LeBron? He's the insanely talented yet soulless and empty vessel, just waiting for whatever corporate sales pitch Nike or IMG wants to pour into him next, a guy with so little self-awareness as to allow himself to be featured in a national ad campaign in a barber shop... a barber shop... this being a guy with a hairline that's disappearing faster than Native American territory in Oklahoma around the invention of the repeating rifle.

See? Plenty of people still hate on the Heat.

* What, this? Oh, that's the asterisk to remind everyone that the 2011-12 National Basketball Association season was 16 games shorter than the standard, normal, legitimate, codified, regular season.

Iraq president in hospital after ?stroke?

BAGHDAD ? President Jalal Talabani, a former Kurdish rebel who became a major player in Iraqi politics and worked to reconcile its feuding leaders, was in hospital on Tuesday after what state television said was a stroke.

?Due to fatigue and tiredness, [Talabani] had a health emergency and was transported... to the hospital in Baghdad? on Monday night, a statement posted on the president?s official website said.

A later statement said that ?bodily functions are normal and the health condition of his excellency the president is stable?. It said the emergency was due to hardening of his arteries.

State television reported that Talabani had suffered a stroke.

Talabani?s chief of staff, Nasser Al Ani, told a news conference on Tuesday that the president was in intensive care, but was in stable condition.

Top Iraqi officials including Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki, Vice President Khudayr Al Khuzaie, Deputy Prime Minister Hussein Al Shahristani and Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Al Mutlak visited Talabani in the hospital on Tuesday, the presidency?s website said.

Talabani has struggled with a series of health problems in recent years.

He underwent successful heart surgery in the United States in August 2008. The previous year, he was evacuated to neighbouring Jordan for treatment for dehydration and exhaustion.

Talabani has also travelled to the United States and to Europe for treatment for a variety of ailments.

Over the past year, he has repeatedly sought to convene a national conference aimed at bridging sharp political differences in the country, and has worked to reduce tensions among Iraqi leaders.

And since becoming president in 2005, he has won praise for attempting to bridge divisions between Sunni and Shiite, and Arab and Kurdish factions.

A married father of two, he has dominated Iraqi Kurdish political life for decades, along with his long-time rival, Kurdistan regional President Massoud Barzani, and his family.

In his native Sulaimaniyah province, Talabani is known simply as Mam (Uncle) Jalal, although his once-ubiquitous political support has dropped off considerably as his Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has been accused of corruption and stagnation.

Born in 1933 in the village of Kalkan in the mountains, as a young man he was quickly seduced by the Kurdish struggle for a homeland to unite a people scattered across Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria.

After studying law at Baghdad University and a stint in the army, Talabani joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) of Mullah Mustafa Barzani, father of Massud, and took to the hills in a first uprising against the Iraqi government in 1961.

But he famously fell out with Barzani, who sued for peace with Baghdad ? the start of a long and costly internecine feud among Iraqi Kurds.

Talabani joined a KDP splinter faction in 1964, and 11 years later established the PUK.

The two Kurdish rebel factions were key allies of the US-led coalition in its 2003 invasion and overthrow of now-executed former leader Saddam Hussein?s regime.

Win over Hitmen an early Christmas present for Edmonton Oil Kings

CALGARY?-?

Tuesday night the Edmonton Oil Kings made a statement.

One that reverberated throughout the Western Hockey League as play shut down for the holiday break.

The 4-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen not only gave the Oil Kings top spot in the Eastern Conference, but also reaffirmed the team as favourites to claim its second-consecutive WHL title.

It?s going to take something special to dethrone them.

?We?ve now won two against Calgary in Calgary,? said Oil Kings leading scorer Michael St. Croix. ?It truly is the battle of Alberta, we were battling for top spot in the conference.

?We knew coming in, we had the potential to be first in the conference going into the break. We like playing the Calgary guys because we don?t like them over there. It?s a heated battle and it was nice to get the win.?

The Oil Kings scored four special-team goals to beat the Hitmen for the second straight time in Calgary?s rink. But perhaps more importantly, they limited the Hitmen to just 16 shots on net, completely outplaying them through the final 40 minutes.

And while defending a two-goal lead in the third period, it was the Oil Kings who were the more aggressive club.

?We?re a team that always wants to be pushing, we?re not going to sit back,? St. Croix said. ?Even when we were up 3-1 we didn?t want to sit back. That?s part of the makeup of our hockey team we?re always going to keep on going.

?Coming in, knowing we could get first place in the conference was a big motivation to us. I thought we played a good 40 minutes. I don?t think the first 20 was the greatest, but we battled through, we persevered and it was good to see us get the win.?

The win gave the Oil Kings 51 points from their first 35 games, one up on the Hitmen, who had led the conference for the majority of the season.

The Oil Kings now have a week off before reconvening on Boxing Day in preparation to host the Red Deer Rebels the following evening.

?We?re happy where we?re at, but there?s still room for improvement,? said Oil Kings head coach Derek Laxdal. ?When we come back in the second half and you put (Griffin) Reinhart, (David) Musil, Martin Gernat and Travis Ewanyk back into our lineup, and if we can get that same kind of effort that we saw in these kids, I think there?s a lot of room for improvement.

?But at the end of the day, I like where we?re going and you have to give credit to the kids, they finished off hard before the Christmas break. We had some tough teams, we had to play Kamloops and Calgary twice and Victoria is a pretty good hockey club. I thought our guys played pretty well defensively and when we got an opportunity to score, we buried the puck.?

Having lost their first four encounters to the Hitmen this season, there was cause for concern, knowing the two teams seem destined to meet at some point in the playoffs.

That concerned has seemingly vanished, however, with a pair of solid outings against a Hitmen team that may lack in style, but more than make up for it in efficiency.

?Even the last time we played in here, I thought we did a pretty good job defensively against them when we got up 3-0,? Laxdal said. ?(Tuesday) we expected more of a push from Calgary, but our guys didn?t give them a lot. We got pucks in the offensive zone, we got them down low and then we cycled them. We didn?t turn pucks over and we did a good job keeping them to the top of the circle.?

Following the Christmas break, the Oil Kings will be getting Reinhart, Musil and Edgars Kulda back from the World Junior Hockey Championships. They also expect to have Gernat on the blue-line, back from shoulder surgery.

If that isn?t enough, the Oil Kings still have room to add another overage player before the Jan. 10 trade deadline.

?We?ve had a lot of pressure on us in the first half in terms of where we?re supposed to be as a hockey club,? Laxdal said. ?Going into the break, we?re in first place. You have to give our kids credit, they hung in there, they stuck with the game plan and the teaching of the coaches and now, we?re right where we?re supposed to be.?

Jelly Bean update for Samsung Galaxy S II, Note delayed to 2013

Samsung's 2011 flagship device?the Galaxy S II?still has its fans. Users of the S II and the Note have been eagerly awaiting the imminent update to Jelly Bean. According to SamMobile, they might have to wait longer. Samsung has delayed the update to the December-January window, after a series of previous delays.

One of the reasons for the delay could be the recent reveal of the exploit on Exynos 4 based devices. Samsung may be working on a fix for the exploit in the upcoming update. The company could also be better optimising its new Touch Wizz for the older devices. The delay could also be caused by the localisation required for different countries, as Samsung plans to release the update globablly instead of rolling it out in specific countries at a time. Users will have to wait till January 2013 to see.

Users of the S II and the Note will have to wait a while longer

?

Back in November, the test firmware for the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the S II was leaked by a developer on the XDA Developers forum. At the time, the build was said to be almost perfect, and that Samsung would start rolling out the update quite soon.

Android 4.1 builds on top of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). This operating system is designed to make everything smoother, faster and more fluid. Notifications are now more dynamic, allowing you to access and interact with the alert from the drop down menu itself without ever having to open the app. Another interesting feature is that voice typing is now faster, working even when one does not have a data connection. Google had also stated that it has re-designed search from the ground up in Jelly Bean with a new user interface and faster, more natural Voice Search. It went on to state that one can type their query or simply ask Google a question. Google can speak back, delivering a precise answer, powered by the Knowledge Graph, if it knows one, in addition to a list of search results.

Here are some of the key features that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean brings to the table:

  • With Jelly Bean, blind users can use 'Gesture Mode' to reliably navigate the UI using touch and swipe gestures in combination with speech output.
  • TalkBack, a screen reader for Android, now supports gestures to trigger actions, navigate applications and traverse text.
  • Browser has improved performance, CPU and memory efficiency. With better performance for animations and HTML5 canvases and an updated JavaScript Engine (V8), pages load faster and feel smoother.
  • Browser now has better HTML5 video support and has a new user experience. Just touch the video to play and pause, and smoothly transition into and out of fullscreen mode.
  • Calendar is more buttery. Content fades in, animations are sprinkled throughout and swiping/paging between days is smoother.
  • You can now swipe from the camera viewfinder to quickly review photos you've taken without having to leave the camera app. You can swipe back to the camera viewfinder to start snapping photos again.
  • When taking a photo, a new animation sweeps your photo off the screen. There is now a new paging animation when swiping between photos.
  • You can now enter text in one of 18 new input languages, including Persian, Hindi and Thai. Additional Indic languages Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam are now supported by the platform.
  • You can use custom keyboard input styles for more than 20 languages, with keymaps for Qwerty, Qwertz, Azerty, Dvorak, Colemak and PC styles.
  • Notifications from the same application are grouped together and the first item is automatically expanded. You can also pinch notifications to expand or collapse them.

What Are the Types of Tropical Fish Diseases - Pets Central

Tropical fish are the most preferred among indoor aquarium hobbyists, mostly for their colorful varieties.

But maintaining these fish healthy and disease free is a challenge. Identifying a symptom is the first stage to curing a fish disease.

The sooner it is done, the better are the chances of survival and prevention of the spread of the disease to the rest of the pool.

Types of Tropical Fish Diseases

Here are a few common types of tropical fish diseases, their symptoms and cure:

Dropsy

Dropsy is a condition caused by bacterial infection. It affects the kidneys causing renal failure. The symptoms of the disease are raised scales, faded body color and bloating body. Malnutrition and unhealthy conditions in the fish tank are the reasons for this infection. It is contagious and spreads rapidly among weak fish. It is a fatal diseases and the best remedy is prevention. So at the first sign of the disease the affected fish should be removed and quarantined. The fish tank should also be cleaned and disinfected immediately to prevent the spread of the disease.

Ich (Ichthyophtirius)

Also called as the white spot disease, Ich is caused by a parasitic infection. The affected fish has white spots on its body concentrated more around the fins. They are raised and slimy. The infection is caused by contaminated water. This is a common occurrence in the new tanks where the water has had little time to be processed through nitrogen cycle and the fish are introduced earlier than recommended. The first step would be to remove the affected fish and quarantine them. The next step is to increase the temperature of the tank and medicate the water with an anti parasitic.

Fin Rot

This is a bacterial infection that affects the fins of the fish. The fins of the fish appear discolored, frayed and rotten. Their tips turn pale and the fish looks visibly sick and listless. The disease is contagious and caused due to contaminated water and poor hygienic conditions in the tank. It can also be caused due to injuries from bullying by bigger fish. The best remedy is to use a broad spectrum antibiotic for medication and change the tank water every week.

Ammonia Poisoning

The two main reasons for the occurrence of this disease would be high ammonia content and/or crowding in the tank. Though not contagious, it affects all the fish at the same time. The condition can be identified by red, inflamed fins, bleeding and breathlessness among the fish. Treatment would include changing the fish to a bigger, well aerated and hygienic tank.

Other common infections caused in tropical fish are: pop-eye, velvet and swim bladder disease. The best way to avoid the incidence of these types of tropical fish diseases is to maintain the tank clean, its water healthy and aerated and use of appropriate medication from time to time.

Thar's gold in them thar termite nests!

Termites are unearthing gold in Australia, and scientists suggest their nests could reveal where miners might strike it rich.

Mineral resources currently account for roughly one-third of Australia's exports. One promising site for gold down under is the Moolart Well deposit in the Western Australian Goldfields region, but gold remains difficult to find there even after nearly 150 years of mining.

"The problem that we face in mining exploration is that a layer of eroded material is covering the gold, effectively hiding it," said researcher Aaron Stewart, an entomologist at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.

Now Stewart and his colleagues suggest miners might want to rely on termites as miniature prospectors. The nests of the insects apparently can hold gold dust, revealing hints of treasures hidden deep underground.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Ancient copy of Ten Commandments goes digital

The Cambridge Digital Library has just made available thousands of pages from fragile religious manuscripts for Internet users' perusal, including a 2,000-year-old copy of the Ten Commandments, known as the "Nash Papyrus."

    2. Solving a 100-year-old scientific hoax
    3. Alan Alda and kids ask: 'What is time?'
    4. First cheesemakers date back 7,500 years

"Using termite nests could help exploration companies narrow down the area that they need to drill," Stewart said. "This has the potential to save a lot of money."

Scientists have often relied on insects to guide exploration. For instance, paleontologists often root through ant mounds to look for any miniature fossil bones and teeth the insects might have carried back to their nests.

Stewart and his colleagues analyzed samples from 22 nests of the termite Tumulitermes tumuli, as well as the surrounding soil. These mounds were located in a known gold-rich area.

The researchers found the termite nests contained high concentrations of gold, with levels five to six times higher than concentrations found more than 16 feet away from the mounds. The scientists detailed their findings in the November issue of the journal Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis.

"The amount of gold found in the nests is actually very low," Stewart said. "It gives us the indication of a hidden deposit, but you can't see the gold and you wouldn't be able to extract any meaningful amount from the nest."

"The termites are not specifically selecting gold to bring into their nests," Stewart added. "It is a fortunate consequence of their habit of building nests, in part from material sourced a few meters below the surface."

Their findings suggest the insects can burrow three to 13 feet into the Earth to reach gravel laden with traces of gold surrounding the deposit of the precious metal. "It is surprising that such small nests are able to vertically move enough material to reveal the buried resource," Stewart said.

This species of termite is widespread across Australia, but the researchers note that other termite species there may also provide useful information for mining companies, such as subterranean termites that form sheaths of soil over food sources. In fact, "there is a history in Africa of termite use for exploration" for gold and other precious minerals, Stewart said. The novelty of this work is how it provides "hard evidence of just how deep they can effectively reveal traces of gold deposits from." As such, termites could provide a new, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way of exploring for new mineral deposits.

"It's kind of cool that you can use insects for prospecting," said insect physiologist Jeffrey Spring at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, who did not take part in this study. "The researchers now probably have to expand their work to some other areas to see if it's really practical ? it's one thing to go where you know gold is, but is it worth the effort to look at termite mounds in other areas?"

Stewart and his colleagues also found this species of termite not only carries gold up from below, but carries other metals inside them as well, originally contained within the plant matter they feed on.

"Metals that that are ingested in food, like zinc, are excreted in poo leading to high concentrations within nests," Stewart said.

Termites have organs called malpighian tubules that roughly correspond to human kidneys. The scientists found these tubules are responsible for the formation of metal-rich "concretions" much like kidney stones in people, findings the researchers detailed in the journal PLoS ONE last month.

"The concretions are one of the ways that insects use to expel excess metals from their bodies," Stewart said. A better understanding of termite biology may be of interest to researchers studying the way specific proteins bind to potentially poisonous metals for detoxification, he added.

Wal-Mart To Sell iPhone 5, iPad As It Snubs Amazon Kindle

Wal-Mart To Sell iPhone 5, iPad As It Snubs Amazon Kindle

By Alistair Barr
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc said on Friday that it began selling Apple Inc's flagship iPhone 5 smartphone at a big discount in thousands of its stores.
Wal-Mart said it is selling the 16 GB Apple iPhone 5 for $127, versus an original price of $189.97. The price is valid with a two-year contract from wireless carriers Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, the retailer added.
Wal-Mart said it is also selling the 16 GB iPhone 4S and the 16 GB iPad with Retina display and WiFi at discounts.
The offers will be available for 30 days in about 3,000 of Wal-Mart's stores, which were not identified. They are not available online, according to the retailer.
Apple has focused on high-priced, premium gadgets for many years and has strictly enforced its prices with retailers and other distributors. However, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman said on Friday that the discounts were arranged with Apple.
"We worked together with them on this," the spokeswoman, Sarah Spencer, said. "They are a great partner."
Wal-Mart is pricing the iPad starting at $399, down from $499. Beginning Dec. 17 the retailer said it will throw in a $30 iTunes card.
Wal-Mart is selling the 16 GB iPhone 4S for $47, versus an original price of $89.97, it said.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
Wal-Mart's cooperation with Apple is a contrast to its relationship with Amazon.com Inc , the world's largest Internet retailer.
In September, Wal-Mart said it would stop selling Amazon's Kindle eReaders and tablets, placing a bet that consumers would be more interested in Apple's gadgets. This spring, Target Corp st opped selling Kindle devices.
