Scaling up polymer blobs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Scientists use simulations to test the limits of their object of study -- in this case thin films of polymers -- to extremes of scale. In a study about to be published in EPJ E, Nava Schulmann, a researcher at Strasbourg University, France, and colleagues use a well-known model capable of providing information on heat and mechanical energy exchange between these polymer chains. They found that polymer blends confined to ultrathin two-dimensional films displayed enhanced compatibility. This was made possible by simulations using a fairly standard model, which is simple enough to allow the efficient computation of dense large-chain systems.

The authors focused on making simulations of self-avoiding and highly flexible polymer chains without chain intersections. To do so, they varied the level of polymer density, as well as their chain length, while using numerical methods to arrive at a universal view of polymer behaviour.

Thanks to molecular dynamics and so-called Monte Carlo simulations, they confirmed that such polymers adopt a scaling behaviour following a power law as a function of density and chain length. This scaling behaviour applies, for example, to polymer pressure and, hence, polymer compressibility. French Nobel laureate Pierre-Giles de Gennes predicted this property in his so-called blob picture approach. Accordingly, a polymer chain is akin to a succession of blobs, like beads in a necklace.

Schulmann and colleagues focused on a regime relevant for applications, referred to as a semi-dilute regime. There, scaling occurs more universally as long as the initial blob size is well defined. Understanding the limit of a system of long chains can currently only be realised in simulations of simplified models. However, the authors hope their findings will facilitate the work of polymer experimentalists.?

Ex-QB Jim McMahon talks of early-stage dementia

CHICAGO (AP) ? Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon, who is suffering from early-stage dementia, has told a Chicago television station that while he appreciates what football has done for him, if he could do it over, he would play baseball.

In an interview with Fox affiliate WFLD-TV, aired Wednesday, the 53-year-old McMahon says he knows where he's going when in an airport. But when he meets people, "I'm asking two minutes later, 'Who was that?'

"When my friends call and leave me a message ... I'll read it and delete it before I respond and then I forget who called and left me a message," he added.

McMahon says he is not currently worried about his mind withering away. He says he still reads a lot and is doing other things to keep his mind active. However, he said he doesn't know whether he is getting worse.

"Other than just sitting in the house, I'm on the road doing these different events and charities, helping my buddies out," McMahon said. "When I'm home, I'm usually sitting in the back of my room just watching TV in the dark and when I come out it's to the kitchen to get something to eat."

Knowing what he now does about the effects of the punishment he received in his 14-year NFL career, McMahon said, he would have chosen a different career.

"That was my first love, was baseball, and had I had a scholarship to play baseball. I probably would have played just baseball," he said. "But football paid for everything, it still does. That Super Bowl XX team is still as popular as it ever was. Until they win again, we're gonna still make money."

McMahon led the Bears to the 1986 Super Bowl victory over New England. He is now among the retired players suing the NFL for concussion-related dementia and brain trauma.

More than 2,400 retired players are plaintiffs, looking for the kind of success smokers had against the tobacco companies. The result then was a landmark, $206 billion settlement shared among 46 states. The ex-players are taking on a multibillion-dollar industry that is the most popular sport in the United States.

McMahon said he suffered four concussions while playing. He said after being slammed by the defense, team doctors generally would ask him how hef felt and whether he could follow a finger with his eyes.

"They'd ask you questions, basic questions. Where are you, what day is it? Stuff like that. And if you were able to answer that and seem like you were OK, they would let you back in."

McMahon said he realizes fans believe the lawsuit is motivated by greed, but he said many players didn't make a lot of money in the 1980s. He noted that his contract was mostly incentives, and if he didn't play he wasn't going to get paid.

Replacement refs gone by Sunday? Labor talks hurried after 'national joke.'

The NFL and its locked-out officials are near a deal, reports suggest. The officiating debacle Monday night appears to have made plain to owner the huge stakes involved for the league.

When candidates in the heat of a presidential campaign take time to complain about pro football officiating, it is a sign that something is seriously amiss. The National Football League appears to have gotten the message, responding to a game some have called the Monday Night Monstrosity by stepping up labor meetings with locked-out officials.?

New reports suggest that the two sides are nearing a resolution, and that the officials could return as soon as Sunday. Replacement referees had drawn attention to the situation through several miscues, blown calls, and drawn-out games in Week 2, followed by even more in Week 3 ? culminating in Monday night's game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, when referees apparently blew a call that directly decided the outcome of the game.?

The magnitude of the mistake, in addition to the fact that it occurred in a prime time game, might have made plain the stakes to the NFL owners.

?They were working toward a resolution before Monday night, but Monday night has accelerated the need to get the deal done fairly quickly,? says David Carter, director of the University of Southern California?s Sports Business Institute. ?At this point, fans want to know what?s going to happen, sponsors want to know, the gambling industry is concerned ? and fans that have fantasy sports teams want to know what they?re going to be treated fairly and that the integrity of the game is on par with what they?ve always expected.?

The 31 team owners had in essence hoped that fans and players wouldn?t notice that it was fielding Division II and III college referees. Instead, it became the primary story line for a league that is notoriously sensitive to bad publicity. Some players have complained that the game is now ?a national joke.?

?It?s true that people are still watching the game and ratings are actually up because of the spectacle, but I don?t think fans will be as interested in watching if they don?t believe games are being credibly officiated by week 10 or 11,? says Michael McCann, a sports law expert at Vermont Law School in South Royalton.

The pressure to break the labor impasse has been building since the preseason. Several blown calls in Week 2 added to the urgency. But nothing could have been worse than what happened Monday night, when two replacement refs stood side by side and gave conflicting signals on a game-deciding Hail Mary pass.

When The First Amendment Died | FrontPage Magazine

First of all I just want to give a big shout out to the savage sadists, who?put a bounty on my head?for insulting their precious little ?prophet.?? You?re going to be hearing a lot more from me in these days.? So, get used to it, because my free speech and I are not going anywhere and you fascist fanatic freaks will be hunted down and prosecuted, Insha?Allah.

Now then, with all of the?death threats directed at me?and others, who are simply telling the truth?about Islam, one has to wonder, what are the leaders in Islam trying to hide?? It?s a belief system and we should be allowed to question it, criticize it, to question it and even mock it.? In fact, come to think of it, we are allowed to do all of those things.? This is America, land of the free and home of the brave ? also home of the First Amendment, a freedom which keeps the rest of the free world free.? And free is how we intend to remain, no matter what the cost.

But if America is a free country then why is a New Jersey Islamic cleric, Mohammad Qatanani, leader of the Islamic Center of Passaic County (ICPC)?saying this? ?Americans,?have to put limits on freedom of speech,? and ?Americans may?have?the?freedom?to speak their mind, ultimately, they have no?right?to talk about Muslim holy issues? and things of that nature.? Has he forgotten where he is? ?Or is he in America to try to change things for the benefit of Islam?

Moronic Muslim messages such as this one, here in America, are in no short supply.? In fact lately, Islamist leaders and many so-called ?moderate Muslims? seem to be feeling somewhat emboldened?by the recent wave of global fascist fist shaking and?showing their true colors, at last.

It?s probably worth mentioning that the Department of Homeland Security charges that this enemy of free speech, Imam Mohammad Qatanani, in applying for a green card, failed to disclose that in 1993 he was arrested in?Israel?and convicted of aiding Hamas.??Qatani also has admitted to being a?member of the Muslim Brotherhood?which is the parent organization of Hamas. ?How Islamophobic of me really though to even bring this up.? There must be some kind of a misunderstanding actually because?New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie?keeps calling this terrorist-tied enemy of the American Constitution his ?friend?.

Speaking of people and organizations that are here to change America to accommodate Islam ? I could not help but notice that CAIR, the?Council on American Islamic Relations, was using social media in a rather irresponsible way.? Recently, ?CAIR National? a Hamas front group, decided to distribute an article, which tries to connect me to the making of a film that I clearly did not make:

This?article?also seems to imply that the threats are probably made up, and even if they are real,?I probably have it coming, given what I wrote on this last 9/11?day of remembrance.? The continuous advancement, of?this concocted rumor, has resulted in a?bounty of 10 million Rupees being placed on my head?by Islamic terrorists.? Someone seems to have a lot invested in fanning the flames and keeping this ?misunderstanding? alive in the Pakistani press and the online Islamo-blogosphere ? also known as the ?Islamosphere? or ?the place where so-called Islamophobia researchers signal to Jihadists whom they should target for death threats and/or assassination?.

Pictured Above: An Islamic bounty on my head of 10 million Rupees.
Does the head shot on the right make me look fat?

Anyway, I?ll cycle back to the issue of?Islamic terrorists calling for my assassination?in a moment. But first I want to expose, once and for all, the followers of Jesus Christ.

?Jesus Christ? is a recurring character on Fox?s hit comedy series, ?Family Guy?.? In the now legendary episode called, ?I Dream of Jesus? Peter discovers Jesus working at a record store and tries to help him make a comeback, by booking Jesus on the Jay Leno Show.? The character of Jesus then skyrockets to fame, goes on tour, blinged out in gold chains and designer sunglasses, while backed by a band of bikini-clad back-up singers.? He calls his act ?Jesus Christ and the Pussy Cat Dolls?.

Pictured Above: The most-watched episode of ?Family Guy? in America called ?I Dream of Jesus?

Strangely however, I don?t see followers of Jesus Christ storming embassies, burning flags,?gang raping an Ambassador, rioting in the streets chanting ?death to America!? or putting a bounty on anybody?s head.? I?m not a follower of Jesus Christ personally, but I did grow up in a family that was a big part of his fan club.? And I do recall from years of Sunday school that Jesus did teach something about forgiveness and loving your neighbor.? Come to think of it, he set bar pretty high, because he said to love your neighbor as yourself.? And unlike the illiterate, blood-thirsty savage Muhammad, he never said to ?strike terror into the hearts of the unbelievers?.? And what holy man would utter such belligerent nonsense unless he was riddled with insecurities and scared to death of being found out for being a con artist, a?child rapist?and a thief?

So why are the followers of Muhammad so touchy?? Do they suffer from the same insecurities that Muhammad did?? Why do their fragile feelings get hurt so easily?? Why do so many of Muhammad?s deeply delusional followers demand we respect their imaginary ?prophet? or else face death threats, rioting, violence and destruction?? Why are we expected to pretend that this self-proclaimed ?prophet? is beyond criticism and to roll over when his followers attack our First Amendment right to free speech?

What is it about Islam that makes it so opposed to free speech, and why do its leaders keep telling us that Islamic Law (also known as Sharia Law) is compatible with our Constitution?? If?Sharia Law?denies the right to free speech, then clearly it is not compatible with the Constitution. Why all?the lies?and double standards?

Could it be that?Islam commands that it is superior?? It?s hard to believe that a severely indoctrinated culture, suffering from such insufferable insecurity could expect us to believe something so absurd, but actually they do.? In the muddied minds of the Muslim masses this is not a double standard at all.? In fact this is central to the belief system of Islam ? that Islam is superior and that the whole world must submit to the laws of Islam.

In the best-selling fictional thriller, ?The Hoy Quran,? poorly ghost-written by an illiterate desert filthy old man, using the pen name ?Allah,? the character ?Muhammad? arrogantly gives everyone who does not follow his delusional ideology three options: either you convert, subjugate or be killed.? Furthermore, the Islamic scriptures command that Mohammad is the highest moral example in Islam ? the man to be followed and imitated.??According to Islamic Scholar and author, Dr. Bill Warner:

?The importance of studying Muhammad is found in the Koran itself. Over 30 times the Koran says that every human being is supposed to do everything in their life patterned after Muhammad. Then it turns around and says over 40 times that if you don?t do everything like Mohammed did it, you will go to hell. Everything has to be done the way Muhammad did. Muhammad is the perfect pattern of life for all peoples for all time.?

1,400 years of following the horrific example of ?The Prophet? has created a culture of fear, violence, Jew hatred, women hatred, homicide of homosexuals, prohibition of critical thinking and endless wars, tyranny and an absolute intolerance for free speech.? It grows like a giant wicked beast, which reaches out its poisonous tentacles into numerous climate regions of the planet and brainwashes the minds of the most frightened, least educated, poorest people, the ones who are most vulnerable, promising them paradise and scaring them into submission with the threat of hell, making them all the ?slaves of Allah?.? Its tyranny must end.? But other than that, Islam is peace.

At least, that is what we are told by our Petroleum-compromised past President, our Islamist appeasing current Commander and Chief, Mullahs, Muftis, clerics and Imams around the world and the Council on American Islamic Relations.

So, if Islam is peace, then why did an Islamic cleric place a Fatwa on Salman Rushdie to be assassinated after the publication of the award-winning novel, ?The Satanic Verses??? Why did the Danish Cartoonist,?Kurt Westergaard wake up to a Somali Muslim, armed?with an axe and a knife, who had broken into his home to murder him for drawing ?the prophet? Muhammad?? Why is it that the filmmaker of?the 11 minute film ?Submission?,?Theo van Gogh, was shot several times in broad daylight, and then had a sword rammed into his heart with a note to?his co-filmmaker?(causing her to go into hiding), denouncing the ?mocking of the prophet??

What do these artists and many others like them have in common?? They have used the arts to lampoon Muhammad.? So, given that Muhammad is the ?highest moral example? to his followers, what would Mohammed have done?? According to the?Islamic scriptures, Mohammed did find out about some?poets who were lampooning him?and he had all of them murdered for it.? Those who seek the death of artists who lampoon Muhammad are simply being devout Muslims, by following the numerous commands which state that Muhammad is the highest moral example in Islam.? The word Islam literally means ?submission? and those violent deranged individuals who carry out violence in the name of Allah (Jihad) are merely submitting to Islam.? Islam is a mental illness, it?s contagious and its only remedy is truth.

As I mentioned earlier, I was recently accused of being the filmmaker behind the hit YouTube Islamo-Comedy ?The Innocence of Muslims.? I haven?t seen a movie this bad since, ?He?s Just Not that Into You.?? However,?I did not make ?The Innocence of Muslims?.? I had nothing to do with the making of ?The Innocence of Muslims?.? I am not the filmmaker.? Here, I?ll print it in Arabic:

?? ??? ??? ???? ?????? ?????????. ?? ??? ??? ?? ????? ?? ??? ??????. ?? ??? ??? ?? ????? ???? ??????.

Unfortunately, an estimated 2/3 of Musims cannot read.? And as for those who can, so far 3 Pakistani newspapers name me as ?the filmmaker? (here?and?here and?here).

And now a?Pakistani government official put a bounty on the head of ?the filmmaker? without naming anyone in particular.? Soon after, a?Pakistani Islamic cleric put a bounty of ?10 million Rupees? (where have I heard that before?) on ?the filmmaker? without naming anyone by name.?? It?s as if this were to insure that there be no future filmmakers who create YouTube videos which ?mock the prophet?.

Someone?purposefully planted the false story that I made the film, even though the real filmmaker has clearly been identified.? Again, if I ever do make a film which ?mocks the prophet? I will stand behind it.? Whoever is behind this plot,?planting this story?and trying to fan the flames to get me assassinated, is trying to exact revenge, to silence me.? Given the number of Islamists I have exposed, for their terrorist ties, in my articles online, figuring out ?who done it? is like something right out of an Agatha Christie novel, if Agatha Christie was wearing a burka and the property of some Muslim man.? So why is that?? Have I hit a nerve?? Who would have the resources, the connections and the drive to keep this false rumor alive?

Whoever is behind this plot to silence or kill me, it doesn?t matter.? Because I will not be silenced.? I will not submit ? and neither should you.? I will continue to share information which exposes Muhammad for the vile, disgusting, pedophile, rapist, homicidal sadistic maniac, blood thirsty tyrant, hiding a desperately fragile ego ? and so should you.

Islam?s dirty little secret regarding the truth about Muhammad must be exposed consistently.? Now is not the time to recoil, dazed in a state of shock, paralyzed with fear, just because you see savages rioting on your TV screen.? I speak to the FBI several times a day, from the confines of a safe house, where I have been advised not to walk next to any windows.? And I am not afraid. ?And neither should you be afraid. ?For Islam is just a scared little man ? a scared little man whom we can and must defeat.

This is our time.? The time is now.? The time has come.? Islam is making a major move, a power grab ? not as a sign of confidence, but because in fact Islam is a dying idea, desperately clawing at anything to survive.? But it cannot.? Islam cannot survive the information age.? Islam cannot stand up to critical thought, to reason, to factual analysis, to being outnumbered by rational sane and civilized people willing to speak up.? If you are suffering from the delusion that you are a Muslim, seek psychiatric attention from a trained professional immediately.? But if you are a lover of liberty than now is the time ? now more than ever ? this is your time and my time and our time to stand up and say ENOUGH.? Truth is the enemy of Islamic brutality.? Spread it.? Spread it like Napalm.

Peace,

Hundreds of Syrian refugees riot in Jordanian camp

AMMAN/GENEVA (Reuters) - Hundreds of Syrian refugees demanding help to return home from a camp in northern Jordan rioted and clashed with security forces on Monday night, Jordanian and United Nations officials said.

Six members of the security forces were wounded by stones thrown by protesters, a spokesman for the Jordanian forces said on Tuesday, while Syrian activists at the Zaatari camp said that several refugees were injured.

Zaatari contains about 30,000 refugees and has been the scene of frequent protests about conditions at the camp.

"There was a demonstration that got out of hand," Sybella Wilkes, spokeswoman for the U.N. refugee agency, said in Geneva.

Wilkes said that 300 refugees were believed to have been involved in the protest and that they wanted to return to Syria to help their families, despite worsening violence in the country.

"Jordanian authorities said they were very reluctant to take people to the border, where they have seen a lot of insecurity. They didn't want to take people into harm's way," Wilkes added.

One refugee at the camp, speaking on Skype, said that the violence broke out after security forces detained four people. Camp residents gathered and started hurling stones at the security forces, who responded by throwing stones back at them and firing tear gas, the refugee said.

The spokesman for the security forces said that seven people were arrested for inciting violence but did not comment on how the riot was handled.

Work by Mass. lab could taint 1,100 inmates' cases

BOSTON (AP) ? Faced with the daunting task of evaluating more than 34,000 drug cases handled by a Massachusetts chemist accused of misconduct, prosecutors and defense attorneys are starting with 1,140 cases of people who are already serving prison sentences based on potentially tainted evidence.

David Meier, a defense attorney and former prosecutor appointed to help sort through the legal quagmire created by the chemist's alleged actions, on Monday turned over a list of 690 people currently serving sentences in state prisons and 450 who are currently serving sentences in county jails. Samples in all of the cases were tested by chemist Annie Dookhan, who state police say failed to follow testing protocols and deliberately mishandled evidence in some cases.

Meier said it is unclear how many of those samples might have been tainted by Dookhan's actions, but said both sides want to deal first with people who are already in prison.

"That is our first priority, people who are presently incarcerated," he said.

Meier said lawyers in those cases will now have to work out resolutions on a case-by-case basis.

"The merits and any alleged issues in any one of those cases is for prosecutors and defense attorneys and judges to determine," he said.

State police have said Dookhan was involved in testing more than 60,000 drug samples involving about 34,000 defendants during her nine years at the Boston lab. Dookhan resigned in March during an internal investigation by the state Department of Public Health, which ran the lab until state police took over on July 1 as part of a budget directive.

Meier, who was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick last week, met Monday with a group of district attorneys, defense attorneys and public safety officials. After the meeting, Meier said he turned over a list of currently incarcerated defendants whose cases were worked on by Dookhan, either as the primary chemist, who performs an initial test on a drug sample, or as the secondary chemist, who performs a second, confirmatory test.

The list does not include thousands of people who are currently awaiting trial, are on probation or are serving federal sentences in cases in which Dookhan tested drug samples.

Since the lab was closed last month, judges in Suffolk and Norfolk counties have already begun to hear motions filed by defense attorneys seeking bail reductions for drug defendants awaiting trial in cases handled by Dookhan. Prosecutors have agreed to many of those motions, citing possibly tainted evidence.

Dookhan hasn't been charged, but the state attorney general's office is conducting a criminal investigation.

On Monday, a judge in Boston agreed to put the sentences of career criminal David Huffman on hold and set bail for him at $75,000 cash, with GPS monitoring. The 55-year-old Huffman had pleaded guilty in August to trafficking in heroin and cocaine, possession of oxycodone with the intent to distribute and unlawful possession of ammunition and a firearm as an armed career criminal He began serving concurrent seven- to 10-year sentences last month.

Huffman's lawyer, Bernard Grossberg, said the next step will likely be for the defense to ask that Huffman be allowed to withdraw his guilty plea.

"He would not have pleaded guilty to the gun charges if it was not part and parcel of his plea on the drug charges," Grossberg said.

Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley, said prosecutors opposed the motion to put his sentence on the gun charges on hold. He said the gun evidence was tested in a different lab and was unaffected by the drug lab scandal.

"This is an individual who's been involved in just about every type of property and violent crime over the course of 40 years. He is a mid-tier narcotics distributor and was a plague on the community," Wark said.

"We believe the judge should have treated the two cases separately," he said.

Dookhan has not responded to repeated requests for comment. Her father, Rasheed Khan, told The Associated Press that she had been "bullied and abused," but he would not say by whom.

"No one has heard her side of the story," Khan said outside his home in Kissimmee, Fla., on Saturday.

State police have said Dookhan failed to follow testing protocols and deliberately mishandled evidence in some cases.

In a letter sent to defense attorneys earlier this month, Max Stern, the president of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said he was told during a meeting with state officials that Dookhan was accused of deliberately tampering with evidence, including the weight of drug samples, which can affect the length of sentences given to drug defendants.

India's BSE Sensex marginally gained 0.08 percent or 14.09 points to 18766.92. Among the major gainers were Bharat Petroleum (1.55 percent), Tata Power Co (1.27 percent) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (1 percent).

Market sentiment turned negative to know that disagreement continued to prevail between Germany and France over the formation of a banking union as part of the measures to overcome the debt burden faced by the euro zone.

During their meeting at Ludwigsburg in Germany Sunday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande gave statements which clearly brought forward the discord between the two countries over the plan to have a banking union.

Stressing that he supported a banking union, Hollande pointed out that its structure should be prepared at the earliest.

However, Merkel made it clear that she was against doing anything very quickly. She stood for taking time to make sure that the banking union had a framework which could deliver good quality results.

Earlier this month, the European Union put forward the proposal for the European Central Bank to be granted full supervision of all the euro zone banks from January 2014, which has been seen as a key step towards a region wide banking union. This step has been announced as part of the measures to attain full fiscal union.

Meanwhile, market participants are concerned to note that China hasn?t yet announced any policy measures though there are clear indications that its economy is weakening. ?The preliminary HSBC Flash Purchasing Managers Index released last week showed that China's manufacturing activity continued to contract in September. This has increased the urgency to have monetary easing measures to

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: West Torrance's third strikes devastating to South Torrance

Potent Warriors score no fewer than four touchdowns on third-down plays.

West Torrance tight end Mat Boesen scores a long touchdown against South Torrance on a middle screen in the first half.

West Torrance probably couldn't think of a more devious plot to demoralize an opponent.

In the first 11 times the Warriors were confronted with a third down Friday night, they converted 10 of them with four of the plays being touchdowns in their 49-14 nonleague victory over visiting rival South Torrance.

Come to think of it, West didn't even think of it.

"I don't really know if it was third down or not," said tight end Mat Boesen, who turned a middle screen on third-and-20 into a 48-yard scoring play in the second quarter. "We were just looking to score on every play. That's our offense. We just want to get in the end zone every time."

The Warriors' high-tempo offense often seemed like it could as they moved to 4-0 by rolling up 585 yards.

"Honestly, a lot of times we're not even thinking about the down and distance," West coach Greg Holt said. "Certainly there are times when we want to look at down and distance, but a lot of times we ask the guys to have short memories. Let's call the next play and see what happens.

"When you go a little bit quicker, guys tend to not dwell on the negatives and they're coming out and just instinctively playing."

And distinctly scoring.

Quarterback Joey Notch completed 14 of 20 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns.

Running back Barry Thomas rushed for 191 yards with four touchdowns on 20 carries.

West averaged 11 yards per play in the game.

"They move. They're on the ball and they're going," said South coach Josh Waybright, whose team fell to 2-2. "Our kids were a little gassed and they're a well-oiled machine.

"They've got a great team. It's one of the best West teams I've seen in a long time."

West struck first on Thomas' 3-yard scoring run on third down, but the Spartans came right back to tie when running back Ian Van Natta cut back and darted up the middle for a 68-yard touchdown run.

Boesen's touchdown catch broke the tie, then Thomas made it 21-7 with a 13-yard scoring run.

After West stopped South's fake field-goal attempt, Notch came back with with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Craig Knaus and it was 28-7 at the half.

Then West scored the first three times it had the ball in the third quarter.

Notch got it started with a 78-yard touchdown pass to Dane Silverlake on third down, then Thomas sprinted 85 yards for a score the next time the Warriors touched the ball.

Thomas' 19-yard touchdown run made it 49-7.

South scored again on the last play of the game, when quarterback Kyle Nesbit connected with Jake Dobie for a 20-yard touchdown pass.

Aside from Van Natta's touchdown run, the Warriors were stifling on defense.

"I think we still need to work a little bit on our run-stopping," said Boesen, who had two sacks and a fumble recovery. "But otherwise we were really pretty solid."

And they had something else to rely on.

"Our offense has been on a roll lately," Holt said, "and that's always a good defense."

Somali rebels claim killing of MP, threaten more assassinations

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Islamist rebels said they shot dead a Somali lawmaker in Mogadishu on Saturday and threatened to kill every legislator in the country.

Gunmen shot dead Mustaf Haji Mohamed outside his home after evening prayers, the latest in a wave of attacks since Somalia's new assembly elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud earlier this month.

"How many times had we warned Somalis against joining the infidel government?" Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, spokesman for military operations for the Islamist militant group al Shabaab, told Reuters late on Saturday.

"Let it be a good lesson for the rest."

Mohamud's election was hailed by his supporters and Western powers as a vote for change after more than two decades of violence. The militants were swift to brand the political newcomer a "traitor" who headed a government serving only Western interests.

Mohamud was the target of a failed suicide bombing just two days into his new job.

"We killed legislator Mustaf ... and we will kill all Somali MPs and officials one by one," Musab said.

The U.N. secretary-general's special envoy to Somalia, Augustine Mahiga, called the shooting a cowardly act that was a "reminder of the challenges faced by the new institutions and administration."

The appointment of a new, slimmed-down parliament and the first presidential vote came as African troops prepared an assault on al Shabaab's last stronghold in the south of the country.

Al Shabaab drafted in hundreds of fighters from other regions this week to reinforce the port city of Kismayu.

The African Union AMISOM force said, however, there were signs of deepening internal rifts within al Shabaab. More than 200 rebels defected near the town of Jowhar, about 80 km (50 miles) from the capital, on Saturday, AMISOM said.

"Al Shabaab is divided and being defeated across Somalia," Brigadier Michael Odonga, the force's deputy commander, said.

There was no immediate reaction from al Shabaab.

While the loss of Kismayu and its port would weaken the rebels' morale and deprive them of a key revenue source, it would unlikely deliver a knockout blow to the insurgency.

Although AMISOM and Somali government forces have regained control of numerous towns across southern and central Somalia, the vast rural areas between remain a free-for-all.

Diplomats expect al Shabaab to retreat to the hinterlands, as they have done before, and resort increasingly to the suicide bombings and targeted assassinations that have marked Mohamud's first two weeks in power.

Darden profit rises even as Red Lobster struggles

(AP) ? Darden Restaurants Inc. said Friday that its fiscal first-quarter net income rose 4 percent even as it struggled to grow a key revenue figure at its flagship Olive Garden and Red Lobster chains.

Its earnings beat Wall Street expectations, and its shares rose more than 4 percent in premarket trading.

At Olive Garden, the company's biggest chain, Darden has been trying to increase sales by retooling its marketing message and updating its menu. Although traffic at established restaurants declined during the quarter, the company said a key sales figure edged up 0.3 percent on higher prices.

At Red Lobster, sales at restaurants open at least a year fell 2.6 percent as traffic declined. The sales metric is a key indicator of health because it strips out the impact of newly opened and closed locations.

The Orlando, Fla.-based company noted that its Red Lobster chain was up against a tough comparison because sales at restaurants open at least a year rose 10.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. It also noted that traffic picked up in the final month of the quarter.

Darden stood by its fiscal 2013 forecast that revenue is expected to increase 9 percent to 10 percent, mostly as a result of the addition of as many as 110 new restaurants.

Combined revenue at Olive Garden, Red Lobster and LongHorn locations open at least a year in the U.S. is anticipated to rise 1 percent to 2 percent. Darden expects earnings from continuing operations to climb 5 percent to 9 percent for the year.

For the three months ended Aug. 26, the company said it earned $110.8 million, or 85 cents per share. That's compared with $106.6 million, or 78 cents per share, a year ago. Earnings from continuing operations were 87 cents per share.

Analysts expected earnings of 83 cents per share, according to a FactSet survey.

Shares of Darden rose $2.29, or 4.2 percent, to $57.01 per share before the market open. That would take it above its 52-week high in regular trading of $55.84 set in mid-May.

Revenue rose 5 percent to $2.03 billion from $1.94 billion a year ago, meeting Wall Street's expectations. The boost was driven by new restaurant openings.

At LongHorn Steakhouse, revenue at restaurants open at least a year rose 3.6 percent.

Darden also declared a quarterly dividend of 50 cents per share. The dividend will be paid on Nov. 1 to shareholders of record on Oct. 10.

The company owns and runs more than 2,000 restaurants.

THE RACE: Hard for both sides to focus on economy

For months, all the major polls have identified the economy as the No. 1 presidential election issue. But it drifts in and out of focus on the campaign trail as first one side and then the other becomes occupied with something else.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney keeps trying to swing attention back to the dour jobs outlook and President Barack Obama's economic stewardship. But Romney keeps getting knocked off course.

Right now, he's trying to reset his campaign strategy, yet again, to spell out more clearly ? in the nearly two weeks before the first presidential debate ? just what he'd do as president to help lift Americans' economic plight.

But he's still reeling from the adverse fallout from his videotaped comments about Americans who don't pay taxes.

He's even got a new campaign line he's started using: "My campaign is about the 100 percent in America."

It's an attempted comeback from his controversial assertion in the video that "47 percent" of Americans don't pay income taxes, "see themselves as victims," and are dependent on the federal government.

Obama was also knocked off stride a bit by his "you didn't build that" remarks in July. And he's undergone campaign strategy resets several times.

Both Obama's and Romney's campaigns have been roiled by violence in the Middle East and the killings of four Americans in Libya, including the U.S. ambassador.

Another reason the campaign dialogue shifts away from the economy so often is that nothing much has changed lately. Job creation and economic growth are proceeding at a glacial pace.

Both candidates were spending more time campaigning in swing states and both were in Florida on Thursday. Obama had events in the Miami area and in Tampa, Romney in Sarasota.

Effect of body mass index on blood pressure varies by race among children

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Obesity in black children more severely impacts blood pressure than in white children who are equally overweight, according to a new study presented at the American Heart Association's High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions.

Researchers examined the effect of age and body weight on blood pressure in children at an obesity clinic. While age and body weight were similar among black and white patients, black children had significantly higher blood pressure compared to their white counterparts.

On average, the black children's blood pressure was 8 percent higher than white children. This suggests that obesity affects blood pressure more in black children. The researchers said further research is needed to better understand this race-specific effect, as it could lead to better care and more targeted prevention strategies against high blood pressure in black children.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Indiana University Purdue University Signature Center Initiative.

Why we all may one day look like Brazilians

It really happened: Six generations of inbreeding spanning the years 1800 to 1960 caused an isolated population of humans living in the hills of Kentucky to become blue-skinned.

The startlingly blue people, all descendants of a French immigrant named Martin Fugate and still living near his original settlement on the banks of Troublesome Creek when hematologists studied them in the 1960s, turned out to have a rare blood condition called methemoglobinemia. A recessive gene was pairing with itself to change the molecular composition of their blood, making it brown as opposed to red, which tinted their skin blue.

The hematologists' attempt to trace the history of the mutant gene revealed a gnarly Fugate family tree, contorted by many an intermarriage between first cousins, aunts and nephews, and the like over the generations. Dennis Stacy, whose great-great-grandfather on both his mother's and father's sides was the same person ? Henley Fugate ? offered a simple explanation for the rampant interbreeding: In the old days in eastern Kentucky, Stacy said, "There was no roads."

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Reality check on Jesus and his 'wife'

A fourth-century fragment of papyrus that quotes Jesus telling his disciples about "my wife" has set off a buzz among scriptural scholars ? but this is no "Da Vinci Code" come true.

    2. Neanderthals may have worn dark feathers
    3. A reality-TV show for the chemistry set
    4. Will science someday rule out God?

It sounds sordid at worst and lazy at best, but in fact, the Fugates' tale is a miniature version of the story of human coupling since time immemorial. Local populations interbreed, causing a sharing of genes, a resulting in-group physical resemblance and, eventually, identification as a distinct race or ethnic group.?

According to Stephen Stearns, a Yale professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, before the invention of the bicycle, the average distance between the birthplaces of spouses in England was 1 mile (1.6 kilometers). During the latter half of the 19th century, bikes upped the distance men went courting to 30 miles (48 km), on average. Scholars have identified similar patterns in other European countries. Widespread use of bicycles stimulated the grading and paving of roads, lending credence to the Fugate clan's excuse and making way for the introduction of automobiles. Love's horizons have kept expanding ever since.

"The distance between the birthplaces of parents has continued to increase since the invention of the bicycle, making it now easy, if not standard, for parents to have been born on different continents," Stearns told Life's Little Mysteries.

Stearns says globalization, immigration, cultural diffusion and the ease of modern travel will gradually homogenize the human population, averaging out more and more people's traits. Because recessive traits depend on two copies of the same gene pairing up in order to get expressed, these traits will express themselves more rarely, and dominant traits will become the norm. In short, blue skin is out. Brown skin is in.

Already in the United States, another recessive trait, blue eyes, has grown far less common. A 2002 study by the epidemiologists Mark Grant and Diane Lauderdale found that only 1 in 6 non-Hispanic white Americans has blue eyes, down from more than half of the U.S. white population being blue-eyed just 100 years ago. [ One Common Ancestor Behind Blue Eyes ]

"The only explanation for the observed pattern that was consistent with the data (that we could think of) was that assortative mating had changed," Lauderdale told Life's Little Mysteries. Assortative mating is the tendency of people to mate with members of their same ancestral group ? a tendency that has seemingly lessened over time. "This was consistent with a birth year-related increase in the proportions of individuals who listed more than one ancestry in the 1980 census."

Lauderdale says blue eyes won't die out completely; they'll simply stabilize at a low level that reflects the chance of mating between two individuals possessing recessive blue-eye genes.

Other recessive traits will drop to low levels too, according to University of Delaware evolutionary biologist John McDonald. "Because most immigrants to the U.S. are from Asia, Africa or Latin America, any trait that is more common in northern Europeans than in the rest of the world will get less common over the near future in the U.S. due to immigration," McDonald wrote in an email. "Examples would include red and blond hair, blue eyes, and freckles. Traits that are recessive and are more common in some groups than others will decrease due to blending; blue eyes, sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis are examples of this."

Meanwhile, many other physical traits will simply blend together. "Most of the traits that we think of as distinguishing different groups (hair color, skin color, hair curliness, facial features, eye shape) are controlled by multiple genes, so they don't follow a simple dominant/recessive pattern," McDonald explained. "In those cases, blending will make people look more similar over time."

It's not straightforward to predict how blending of genes affects physical appearances, but McDonald said the tendency is for such traits to average out. The average American skin and hair color will probably darken slightly, and there will be fewer people with very dark or very pale skin and hair.

The genetic mixing under way in the United States is also happening to a greater or lesser degree in other parts of the world, the researchers said. In some places, unique physical traits tailored to the habitat still confer an evolutionary advantage and thus might not bow out so easily; in other places, immigration happens much more slowly than it does elsewhere. According to Stearns, perfect homogenization of the human race will probably never occur, but in general, Earth is becoming more and more of a melting pot.

A population forged from the long-term mixing of Africans, Native Americans and Europeans serves as an archetype for the future of humanity, Stearns said: A few centuries from now, we're all going to look like Brazilians.
